More Dog Biscuits: Hair of the Dog

Dax's Pale Ale II is in the fermenter right now and more on that in a separate post.  With the spent grains from that brew, we did another batch of dog biscuits.  This time around we have an appropriate cookie cutter, a bone.  Ingredients will vary per batch and this one has malted as well as flaked wheat.  As always, these are edible for humans in case you are interested in sharing the moment.  You'll get your fiber for sure.  If you actually read this, have a dog and would like to feed it some goodness, please let us know.  The current batch has been shipped and is as DIY as possible considering the shipping boxes were hand cut by an incredibly diligent volunteer from a huge box we needed to get rid of.

Regarding animals and spent grain,
it's common practice for breweries to give their grains to local farmers to feed to livestock.  In the brewing process, it is almost impossible to get all of the nutrients out of the grains and into the wort (80% efficiency is good).  What is left over is a mildly sweet and nutrient rich mixture that can be eaten or used as fertilizer if tilled into soil.  A great example, we visited the Ommegang Brewery over the holidays.  They painted their spent grain silo like a cow so the farmers know exactly where to go to pick up their bounty.  Some brewpubs feature meat from those very same farms completing the cycle.  We'll get there someday.  For now, you get 'artisan' dog food.  Let us know if the recipients have any valuable feedback.
